My thunderbird address book is missing. I only see the Mac address book?

The personal address book in Thunderbird is not listed in "all address books". I only see "Mac OS X address book" in the list of all address books. Also, when I click "add to address book" for a specific email address, it afterwards does not use that saved address for auto completion. How can I get my old personal address book back?
