Matt! Thanks for the help. A device was set to pop3 pulling emails. I reset the password and that was the cure.

Are you using IMAP? It sounds like on the second synchronization (at 10 minute intervals) Thunderbird is not connecting to the server.
Do you have an email scanner in your anti virus program? What happens if you turn it off.
