I'm running TB 52.8.0 64-bit on Linux. Last week, I noticed that I no longer have the preferences drop down on messages that allow me to show remote content. TB simply displays the warning "To protect your privacy, Thunderbird has blocked remote content in this message".

I've checked the solutions here https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1196150 but nothing helped and my settings were already set properly.

This just started last week. If I go into preferences and check the box to always show remote content, that works, but of course, that's not what I want. I want to be able to selectively choose again. I've also tried customizing the button bar on the preview/message, but the preferences button is not an option there.

As it turns out, I had an extension installed called Thunderbird Conversations which allows you to see your inbox more like GMail. That Add-On has been installed for a couple years, but it seems now it was causing a problem. I've disabled it and the preferences drop down is back. I wasn't actually using that add on. I think I tried it, but turned it off for all my mail accounts without actually disabling it completely.
