why does my email get directly downloaded to 'deleted messages', not inbox?
i've checked my settings and nothing tells it to download to a deleted messages folder. and besides, what is a deleted message? when i delete an email it goes to the trash folder, not deleted messages. i've checked between my laptop and home computer and the settings are identical, so i'm confused why the home computer is having problems. do i just need to re-download the thunderbird? thanks

Deleted sounds like an IMAP folder (Trash is a Thunderbird convention.)
I am guessing your mail is being downloaded to a phone or other device and deleted on the server. The account you have with the deleted folder is an IMAP account and synchronises the deleted mail as that is where the other device put it.

Thanks so much. I checked my wife's phone and I found she was deleting emails to a deleted messages folder. Never occurred to me that she was doing it. This should work. Thanks.
ok, so go to Tools menu > account settings > server settings and tell thunderbird to use the deleted folder instead of the trash and all will be good.
The name is not important (at least not to me, consistency is.
