Firefox for Android lets you open and manage multiple tabs so you can easily switch between websites. This article will show you how to open, and manage tabs in Firefox for Android, including inactive tabs, Tab Groups, and synced tabs across your devices.

Where are my tabs?

All of your open tabs are available in the tabs tray.

To open the tab tray:

Tap the tab icon next to the address bar to open the tab tray. The number on the icon indicates how many tabs you currently have open.
From the tab tray, you can access your regular tabs, Private tabs, tab groups, and synced tabs.
Tap a tab to switch to it.

Regular tabs

Regular tabs are the standard tabs you use for everyday browsing in Firefox. Unlike Private tabs, websites you visit in regular tabs are saved to your browsing history. Regular browsing is the default mode when you open Firefox for Android.

Private tabs

Private Browsing lets you browse without Firefox saving your browsing and search history after you close your Private tabs. To view your open private tabs:

Tap the tab icon next to the address bar to open the tab tray. The number on the icon indicates how many tabs you currently have open.
Tap the Private Browsing icon to view your open private tabs.
Tap a Private tab to open it.

Tab groups

Tab groups in Firefox for Android help you organize related tabs together, making it easier to manage browsing sessions, projects, shopping, travel planning, and more. To view your tab groups:

Tap the tab icon next to the address bar to open the tab tray. The number on the icon indicates how many tabs you currently have open.
Tap the tab group icon to view your tab groups.
Tap a tab group to open it.

Synced tabs

Once you’ve set up your free Mozilla account on Firefox for Android, you can sync your bookmarks, logins, open tabs and browsing history between devices. There is a separate tabs tray for viewing and opening your synced tabs. To view your synced tabs:

Tap the tab icon next to the address bar to open the tab tray. The number on the icon indicates how many tabs you currently have open.
Tap the Sync icon to view your synced tabs.
Tap a tab group to open it.

How do I open a tab?

Open a new blank tab

Tap the tab icon next to the address bar to open the tab tray. The number on the icon indicates how many tabs you currently have open.
To open a new tab, tap the button at the bottom right of the tabs tray.

Open a link in a new tab

To open a link in a new tab, long-tap the link to open the contextual menu.
On the contextual menu, tap Open link in new tab, or select Open link in private tab to open the link in your private tabs.
To quickly switch to your new tab, tap the SWITCH option that appears immediately after you open a new tab.

Organize your tabs

Change between grid/list view

You can view your open tabs in List view or Grid view.

To switch how your open tabs are displayed:

Tap the tab icon next to the address bar to open the tab tray. The number on the icon indicates how many tabs you currently have open.
From the menu button, tap Tab settings.
Under Tab view, select either List or Grid view.

Organize tabs with Tab Groups

If you have several related tabs open, you can organize them into Tab Groups. Groups can be named and color-coded, making it easier to keep tabs for things like work, research, shopping, or travel together. Please refer to the Tab Group article to learn more about how to use the feature.

Manage existing tabs

Reload an open tab

Manual reload

To reload a tab manually:

Tap the menu button.
Tab on the Refresh button.

Pull down to refresh

Alternatively, you can simply pull down from the top of the screen while viewing the tab. This will refresh the web page and display any new information or changes.

To disable this feature:

Tap the menu button.
Tap Settings.
Tap Customize.
Under Gestures, tap the toggle next to Pull to refresh.

Close tabs

Close an open tab

Tap the tab icon next to the address bar to open the tab tray. The number on the icon indicates how many tabs you currently have open.
In the tab tray, tap the ✕ on each tab you want to close.
A Tab closed notification will briefly appear after each closing, tap UNDO to reopen the tab.

Close all open tabs

Tap the tab icon next to the address bar to open the tab tray. The number on the icon indicates how many tabs you currently have open.
From the menu button, select Close all tabs.
A Tabs closed notification will briefly appear, tap UNDO to reopen these tabs.

Auto-close open tabs

You can enable Firefox for Android to automatically close tabs after one day, one week or one month. Firefox won’t auto-close tabs by default. See this article to learn how to set your tabs to be regularly auto-closed.

Reopen previously closed tabs

Note: Private browsing tabs will not appear in your history, so they cannot be reopened.

Tap the tab icon next to the address bar to open the tab tray. The number on the icon indicates how many tabs you currently have open.
From the menu button, tap Recently closed tabs.
Tap the tab you want to open.

Tip: You can also view your recently closed tabs in the History panel.

Inactive tabs

Tabs that you haven’t viewed for two weeks will be moved to the inactive section. This setting is enabled by default. To change this setting:

Tap the tab icon next to the address bar to open the tab tray. The number on the icon indicates how many tabs you currently have open.
From the menu button, select Tab settings.
Under the Move old tabs to inactive section, tap the switch next to Tabs you haven't viewed for two weeks get moved to the inactive section to turn it off (gray) or on (purple).

Close inactive tabs manually

Tap the tab icon next to the address bar to open the tab tray. The number on the icon indicates how many tabs you currently have open.
Tap the downward-facing arrow next to Inactive tabs to expand a list of tabs.
Tap on the trash icon next to the number of open inactive tabs to close all incative tabs.
