I have an application that runs in the browser, When I updated Firefox I get the message... "TypeError: netscape.security.PrivilegeManager is undefined"

Reading other posts it seems that this feature has been removed.

Is there a work around? E.g. is there any setting in about:config that I can add to re-enable it?

Failing that, can you tell me the latest version of FF that did support it and I will revert to that.

Note, I am not building a firefox extension, so add-on development is not relevant to me. And the app operates on a separate FF profile on a limited set of safe webisites, so security is not a concern.

i'm just a user, so i cannot give a definite reply, but judging from the lengthy discussion in bug #546848 this is gone for good & there doesn't seem to be any chance that it's going to be reimplemented. for the reasoning of mozilla to remove netscape.security.PrivilegeManager please refer to comment 57 in the bug report...

hello, the preference was removed in firefox 17 - however there have been a number of critical security vulnerabilities fixed since firefox 16, so i wouldn't recommend this version for general browsing on the web. you could download a portable version of the outdated version 16 beside your current installation though & just use it to access that one application you're referring to: http://sourceforge.net/projects/portableapps/files/Mozilla%20Firefox%2C%20Portable%20Ed./Mozilla%20Firefox%2C%20Portable%20Edition%2016.0.2/

Thanks very much for the quick reply.

What do you think the chances are of thsi being put back in and set as an option - i.e. disabled when you install out of the box and have a setting somewhere to re-enable it if you really need it. This would avoid security issues for the general public and preserve backwards compatibility for everyone else.

It just that it is incredibly frustrating when these things keep breaking.
