I am having an Installation problem with Thunderbird to my Imac.

I wish to move away from MS outlook. I have installed Thunderbird desktop email client to my Imac apple desk top computer. When I run the installation software and input my gmail account details the system responds with an error "Authentication error". can you please help me to reconfigure the set up to resolve this problem.
