The toolbar in Firefox for Android makes it easier to browse, search, and access your favorite features. You can customize its layout, switch between light and dark themes, choose your preferred search engine, use voice input, and scan QR codes, all from the toolbar.
This article explains how to make the most of these features.
Customize the toolbar layout
When you first open Firefox for Android, the toolbar will appear at the top.
However, you can customize the placement of the toolbar in Firefox for Android.
- Tap the menu icon in the toolbar.
- Select .
- Tap .
- Choose your preferred Firefox theme: Light, Dark or device theme.
- Select whether you want the toolbar at the top or bottom of the screen.
- Choose to display the tab bar.
- Displaying the tab bar will automatically place the address bar at the top of the screen, below the tab bar.
- Pick a layout:
- Simple: Minimal design
- Expanded: Double-stack toolbar
While choosing the toolbar layout, you can also customize it to display a preferred shortcut.
For the simple layout, you can select one of the following shortcuts:
- Open a new tab
- Share
- Add bookmark
- Translate
- Homepage
- Back

Choose your search engine from the toolbar
Firefox lets you switch your search engine right from the toolbar.
- Tap the search engine icon in the left of the toolbar.
- Select your search engine from the drop-down menu.
Use voice input to search the web
Firefox for Android supports voice search using your device’s microphone.
- Tap the microphone icon in the toolbar.
- Record your input.
- Firefox will automatically process your voice and display search results.
Search QR codes with the toolbar
Use your device's camera to quickly open websites from QR codes.
- Tap the QR code icon in the toolbar.
- Point your camera at a QR code.
- Firefox will scan it and open the associated website.
