When Firefox needs additional permissions to install an update, macOS may ask you to allow administrator access or install a Helper tool. The message you see depends on your version of macOS.
Starting with macOS 27. you may see this message:

Both prompts can appear when Firefox needs additional permissions to complete an update. This article explains why you may see these prompts and what you can do if they keep appearing.

Common scenarios
The Helper tool plays an essential role in ensuring successful Firefox updates, particularly in cases where system permissions or ownership settings may prevent them entirely. Depending on your macOS version, Firefox may ask you to provide administrator credentials or allow administrator access.
You may encounter the Helper tool in the following situations.
IT admins deploying Firefox with the .pkg installer
- As an IT admin, you can deploy Firefox through the .pkg installer.
- In this case, the updater will require the Helper tool to correct the permissions on the application bundle when Firefox updates for the first time, which may lead to the tool asking for credentials.
- macOS may ask for administrator credentials or access to complete this process.
Multiple admin users on the same device
- If Firefox was originally installed by one admin and updated by another, the updater may require elevated privileges.
- In this case, the Helper tool is used once to validate the Firefox app bundle ownership, which in turn allows subsequent updates to be installed by any admin user.
Non-Admin users updating Firefox
- Standard users do not have permission to modify Firefox's core files.
- In this case, the Helper tool will appear on every Firefox update attempt until admin credentials are provided to complete the update.

- You switched to a standard user account. Since non-admin users cannot modify the Firefox.app bundle, you must authorize the helper tool with admin credentials each time Firefox updates.

- Enter valid admin credentials when the Helper asks you to.
Firefox requests the installation of the Helper Tool on every launch
Possible Cause:
- The user never grants admin permissions, and the updates cannot take place as a result, which prompts the Helper tool to appear on every Firefox launch.
Solution:
- Try reinstalling Firefox, which will restore the default permissions.
- Make sure you have admin rights when reinstalling.
Updates are failing even after entering admin credentials
Possible Cause:
- The Firefox.app bundle may have corrupted or restricted permissions that prevent updates.
