I downloaded the latest version of firefox and it has disabled my avg virus protection! I now have no virus protection!!

Windows security center reports that avg antivirus is switched off. Have tried "Turn on now" several times to no effect. Avg security center reports that all features are up to date and working properly

I think this is a problem of avg. Maybe try also asking there: http://forums.avg.com/de-en/avg-free-forum (for example).

AVG updates for Firefox 6

Try Updating AVG from the System Tray icon, see the Attached Screenshot.

Check and tell if its working.
