must i make firefox my default in order to get the awesome bar

I did not make firefox my default browser and all I got was a full blank page with a Google search bar .I watched the getting started video but i can't get an address,search or awesome bar or any kind of menu such as the video shows. Must I make firefox my default browser in order to use it?

I've been a firefox user for about 7 years but haven't been able to use you now because of this problem.
