in general > downloads i save my files to the desktop. the files show up on my desktop and i can open them and saveas them etc. however, when i quit firefox, all the files (which were not saved-as) are deleted. this did not happen before i updated to the newest firefox version.

You can set the pref browser.helperApps.deleteTempFileOnExit to false on the about:config page.

To open the about:config page, type about:config in the location (address) bar and press the "Enter" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.
You can use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a pref more easily.

thank you for your reply, cor-el. however, the preference browser.helperApps.deleteTempFileOnExit is not there... ?

If the pref isn't there then try to create a new Boolean pref with that name.

i set the boolean preference, however the file was still deleted when i closed firefox.

but i have fixed the problem by saving the file when prompted, rather than opening in preview. this was not a problem in the previous firefox version.

thank you for your help, cor-el.
