Many of my pull down menu items are grayed out and can't be used.

Many of my menu items in both email and chat are grayed-out and can't be used. I've tried running in safety mode, but didn't fix the problem. Have upgraded to most recent version of Thunderbird, but still didn't fix the problem.

That is by design. Change the tab to a mail related tab and they will not be greyed out.
