firefox software updater.exe file with virus will not delete from (64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\" . please help!
hi, this seems to be a historical issue on mozilla support. but it is not being resolved when advice is followed i always get a pop up at start up of mozilla firefox which states "install firefox software updater". this appears to be some sort of malware that is not quarantined by windows defender or hit man pro. i can see the exe file located at c:programfiles (x86)mozillafirefox. where it is called "update.exe" but when i highlight it and press delete it will not move the programme on to delete it. i also tried to move it to my documents file to delete it there. but it requests administrator permissions and starts to run the programme when granted. so i stop it. as computer novice i would appreciate it some exact instructions as to how to get rid of this "updater.exe". thank you.

hello, what you described is the normal automatic update mechanism of firefox - please do not fiddle with these files. if the updater doesn't work for some reaseon please try to clear the whole firefox program folder under C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\ and download/install a fesh version of firefox from https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/
Some antivirus client have interfered with or falsely claimed the "updater.exe" in Firefox was a virus, especially after a recent new major Firefox Release.
Try checking for definition updates in the antivirus.
thank you james your advice given was implemented. for computer novices - i googled to discover that the 'definitions' are the information that one sees in file explorer giving - version numbers, file size, date of installation etc. so did an update of mozilla from the company website. the definitions also changed at folder c:programfiles (x86)mozillafirefox for the updater exe file. the pop up has stopped today. it was a genuine reminder. thanks to phillip for that pertinent info to novices too. best wishes, jo.
