The account you set up in Thunderbird is an email account you created with your email provider in the first place. It has got nothing to do with a Firefox account.

I think you misunderstood my question. To post a question I had to set a new ID and password for just for Thunderbird even though I had to set up an account for Firefox. Now I have two ID's and passwords for Mozilla. Seems a waste.

This is the way it is for the time being, and you'll have to live with it. I believe there were plans to use Firefox accounts for SUMO at some point, but now the future of SUMO itself is somewhat uncertain. In any case, this has got nothing to do with Thunderbird itself.
