When starting Thunderbird it often takes very long time Sometimes when I´m opening (or trying to) open a message it might take 2-5 minutes before the message can be seen Fault message is "no response" Have tried to run "repair" have also tried to erase and create a new index file Better ? Not really ....

McAfee I´ve seen some suggestions to turn it off but have no intention to do that

I agree. In the past few days I've reviewed lots of support topics of the past few months. In almost every case where the person has McAfee installed IT has been the cause of slowness. If you intend to stay with Thunderbird you will want to look at that wiki reference from christ1

It first suggests disabling a feature of McAfee that is frankly not needed and known to cause issues. And also suggests how to ensure that McAfee is not scanning Thunderbird directories, which it is NOT supposed to do, and has been broken serveral times over the years.
