Where have the emails I put in the Trash gone?

I emptied my Trash folder this morning, then started going through today's emails. I threw something away I wanted back so I clicked on the Trash folder and it's empty. There is nothing in there. What is going on? Where did the files I've been deleting this morning go?

Never mind. I just went back to T-bird and clicked on the Trash again and now everything appeared.
