my AT&T mail seems to slow mail to a crawl dealing with spam

I have two gmail accounts and one at&t mail account on my thunderbird email, but it appears that the whole system slows to a crawl for long periods dealing with what must be spam on the at&t account. It shows 'downloading #xx's of emails of a thousand--sometimes 10,000 plus emails. After it finally deals with those, it's fine until the next barrage.
