Firefox crashes regularly, even in safe mode and with HW acceleration and WebGL disabled

With no apparent cause, Firefox started crashing on my machine (Scientific Linux 6.7, with 4.4.7 Kernel, Firefox Version 45.1.0, most up-to-date repository version).

  • I created a new profile by renaming .mozilla/firefox/profile.ini

After starting firefox in safe mode from command line

  • I disabled all plugins
  • I disabled hardware acceleration
  • I disabled WebGL in about:config

(These three settings are not reliably saved by firefox.) Firefox crashes with the following command line error: [mschrey@christina:~/.mozilla]$ firefox --safe-mode
