There was just a minor update to Firefox 44 (version 44.0.1) but I don't recall hearing that it changed the theme. If you were previously using Firefox 43.0.n then there is a change other users have noticed in Firefox 44 regarding the toolbar background. The exact effect seems to vary among operating systems.

You can modify the appearance of the toolbar background (and probably the tab background) using a custom style rule. For the toolbar background, I posted an example of how to make it transparent in this thread: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1106779#answer-836563

To return to the gradient appearance you had before, I'm not sure, I don't have Windows 8.1 available for testing now (maybe this weekend).

Try the CTR extension and look at the setting(s) in the CTR Options/Preferences here:

thank you. I've been updating firefox regularly, as the updates are automatic, so I dnt believe I was long behind the community. and this problem never manifested itself until now. its odd, really. I'd love to return to the gradient if at all possible.

I have the gradient in Windows 7 on the main toolbar. These are the rules for the toolbars if you want to try them:

#nav-bar {
  background-image: linear-gradient(rgba(255,255,255,.4), transparent) !important;
}
#navigator-toolbox > toolbar:not(#toolbar-menubar):not(#TabsToolbar):not(#nav-bar) {
  background-image: none;
}

The color of the active tab is harder to figure out; I don't really understand which rule is taking precedence.

thank you. I tried using that via Stylish, but it didnt create a gradient. it only cleared the bottm bar, (the bookmark bar)

YES! I managed to get the desired effect by doing this:

#nav-bar {
  background-image: linear-gradient(rgba(255,255,255,.4), transparent) !important;
}
#navigator-toolbox > toolbar:not(#toolbar-menubar):not(#TabsToolbar):not(#nav-bar) {
  background-image: none;
}

(the !important does the job)
