Firefox performed an update (I think to version 18) and after that, it crashes when I try to open it. It crashes when I try to start in safe mode as well.

I have performed a complete uninstall and reinstall several times. I've checked all the solutions listed in the database and none of them seem to help. I've downloaded the two recommended malware removal programs, performed a complete scan, but they come up with nothing. I've tried to get the details from the error report, but the crasher reporter won't display any. The only thing I get in D:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports\ is a file called LastCrash with the number 1357955879 in the file.

I am running Windows 7, everything has been updated; OS, virus definitions, drivers, etc.

I updated MS Security Essentials and ran an extensive scan. It found a few items, but I don't think the pabbbtyx.dll was listed. Does anyone know where the MS Security Log files are stored? I can verify if it was. The reason is, I am not sure if that is the fix or not. I went in to msconfig and noticed that the DT Soft file, pabbbtyx.dll was set to load on startup. I was able to disable it from startup and now Firefox is working correctly.

So really I don't know if my system is completely clean or if disabling that on startup worked. I guess I could re-enable it to see, but I don't feel like dealing with it now. I have too many issues with this lately and just don't feel like it. Later, I will re-enable it to see if it made a difference and post a reply.

1. Click the Windows Start button, and select Run... on Windows XP or press Windows Key + R on Windows Vista/7. Type in "%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports\submitted" including the quotation marks and click OK.

2. In the resulting folder will be a text file for each crash report you have submitted. Using the View menu, arrange them by date to find out which is the newest file; and double-click on it to open it.

3. Provide us here with the crash ids.

It looks like both the Kaspersky Security Scanner and MS Safety Scanner programs will find that Malware.

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

I've run all the malware checks mentioned. Kapsersky and MS Safety Scanner didn't find anything. Updated Windows Defender and Super Antispyware and ran a scan, but with no luck. I ran the TDSSKiller and it found a locked file, sptd(?), but that didn't fix the problem either.

I rebooted and tried Firefox again, but it still crashed. Crash ID: bp-beaa46c9-a8dc-4f94-8f36-8c75a2130112

I am in the process of doing a full scan with Spybot Search and Destroy.

Update: I completed a full scan with Spybot and it found some malware, but it was mostly tracking cookies. I cleaned everything and tried again. Still no luck with Firefox. I performed a complete deinstall, rebooted, redownloaded the latest firefox setup, then reinstalled. No luck.

Are you able to locate this file that shows in the modules list of the crash report: pabbbtyx.dll

If you can't find the file then boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) to see if that helps.

other users have reported that microsoft safety scanner catches & removes this malware - so try to run a scan with it too: http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/default.aspx

maybe it didn't contain the newest signatures back then? it may be worth running another scan with it, since it did solve the issue for other users on the forum...

@cor-el, yes I can access and have located the file mentioned. I have no idea what that dll is. What do you suggest, remove it?

@madperson, I have already used 4 different malware programs with last night/this mornings definitions. I planned on trying to see if any of them had any updates and running a full scan again.

Which registry keys come up if you search for this file in the registry?

Where is the file located?

Is that in the Windows system32 folder or in its own folder?

HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> Microsoft -> Windows -> Current Version -> Run

Entry: DT Soft - rundll32.exe "D:\Users\<username>AppData\Local\DT Soft\pabbbtyx.dll",LCInitialise

The file is located in D:\Users\<username>AppData\Local\DT Soft and is the only file located in that folder.

Does the creation date of that folder gives any clues when it was created.

Did you install any software around that time?

It just says it was last modified on 1-9-2013. I haven't installed anything recently on this computer.

I did some searching for DT Soft and everything that keeps popping up for it is Daemon Tools. I had that installed on my computer. I uninstalled it to see if maybe that was causing the error. The uninstall didn't remove the file, but I haven't had a chance to reboot yet (still running scans). I tried to remove the file manually, but the system wouldn't let me.

Hello,

I have the same issue, sometime after the 18 version. I am using also windows 7 Pro.

I try updating to 19, still same issue, then 20b, still same issue but safe mode worked there...

What i figured out is that if I run in Windows XP(SP2/3) compatibility mode it works.

I have scanned my computer with two recommended anti-malware apps, but nothing was found.

I hope this will help you in some way, but I fear in the end this is a workaround not a solution.
