Also when i go into updates for ccleaner and advanced system care it opens Firefox browser and internet explorer browser at the same time. Are you using anything designed to open IE tabs in Firefox ?

Try running Firefox in

  • safe mode <-- clickable link for instructions -- (blue) --
No need to make any changes on the first window of options, just click continue
  • Whilst in safe mode also disable all plugins if problems continue

Have you tried checking what is set as your homepage, that allows multiple tabs to be listed, each is separated by the vertical | pipe symbol.

A possibly related thread is 2 windows required for Firefox to run

Thank you John for your answer. BUT !! Still doing the same thing each time I open Firefox. Firstly checks for updates...compatability of addons. Secondly opens two tabs first being http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/12.0/whatsnew/?oldversion=rv:11.0 ( Welcome to Firefox.) Other tab my home page Google.

Thanks again John. But google is there set as my home page.

May just go back to version 11 and stop it updating if i can work out how to do that until they find a fix. It seems I'm not the only one with this problem. As you may notice I'm not that computer literate.

Regards Rob

Which security software (firewall, anti-virus) do you have?

Some security software has virtualization features that can cause problems by protecting and restoring files in the Firefox profile folder.

Hi again Rob,
You can go back to Firefox 11 and I can explain how to do that, see also

I did just write a rather long reply to someone else in which I expressed my opinion as to why that is a bad idea. You will also note the above linked article contains official warnings about security risks.

If you provide screenshots it may be easier to understand what is happening.

In your position I would rather have

  • a single unwanted page as a tab,
especially as I could open any other page or set of pages as the home page
  • than risk
    • loss of identity and personal information (could include password loss )
    • damage to the computer system

Regards,
John
