Location Error

My location shows me in Memphis TN. I am in Sheridan WY. My ISP confirms that my computer shows in Sheridan but I cannot fix the issue. I have never activated a search in Memphis and I have never been there in the "computer age." The "suggestion" that appears is to log into Google and set the address but the locations described do not show in the Google toolbar. I have used Firefox for years but I am going to have to change if this continues.

Hi Bruce, is this problem on a site that is "guessing" your location each time, or is it something that could be set in your account on the site (if you are logged in while using it)?

There are two separate ways sites can get your location for the first time:

(A) IP address only

Sites will look up your IP address with one or more services to compute your likely zip code. You could check the "store locator" feature on the Home Depot, Lowes, or Walmart site -- just the default value, without giving permission to access precise location -- to see whether they get your zip code correct (based on your IP address). If they all agree on Memphis, that would be a useful data point.

(B) Precise location

Sites can prompt you for permission to access your precise location. This is computed by gathering wi-fi hotspot information from Windows and forwarding it to Google to look up in their database. Google sends Firefox an estimated latitude/longitude to forward to the site. (I don't know what happens if wi-fi is turned off on your computer.)

Thanks! We do not use WiFi for security reasons. When I search for anything it sees me in Memphis. If I use Microsoft Edge with another search engine it sees me where I am in Sheridan. I dislike Microsoft Edge but I am at a loss to fix this one. My IP address is verified as Sheridan. I can't imagine how it got Memphis? Where a site has asked for my location on Firefox/Google is gets it right. Suggestions?

If the problem is on Google, try clearing Firefox's cache and your Google cookies and site data. Here's how:

(1) Clear Firefox's Cache

See: How to clear the Firefox cache -- just the Cached web content

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first)

While viewing a page on the site, click the lock icon at the left end of the address bar. After a moment, a "Clear Cookies and Site Data" button should appear at the bottom. Go ahead and click that.

In the dialog that opens, you will see one or more matches to the current address so you can remove the site's cookies individually without affecting other sites.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

OK, I dumped the cache and authorized "location services" on my Google Account. Last checked, still in Memphis.

You can check the connection settings.

  • Settings -> General -> Network: Connection -> Settings

If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet then try to select "No Proxy" if "Use the system proxy settings" or one of the others do not work properly.

See "Firefox connection settings":

You can use websites like these to see how your location is reported via a reverse DNS look up of your IP:

I have tried everything that you and your people have suggested. The IP Address clearly shows Sheridan, Wyoming as the base but I still get Memphis. I suggest that someone with Firefox call me at 307-674-0101.

Hi Bruce, I don't think you should post your phone number on a public forum.

Is Google the only site that is getting your location wrong, the Store Locators got it right?

And you deleted your Google cookies?

Have you tested in Google in Microsoft Edge?

Google cookies are deleted. Google has the location right on Microsoft Edge. The phone number is a listed number for my law firm. I tried to uninstall and reinstall Firefox after reviewing the process on Firefox's web posts. The result, I lost my bookmarks and because the computer in question is synced, the other computers in the office also lost theirs. Given that Google works properly with Edge, I must assume that the problem lies with Firefox.

Do any bookmark backups appear on the Restore menu on any of your Firefox installations? See: Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer.

I'm puzzled where Google is getting that information. Unless there is a different connection path between Firefox and Google vs. Edge and Google, but unless you are using a proxy server or VPN, it should be the same. I think you already set "No proxy" in the connection settings, and you didn't mention using any add-ons that modify your connection. Puzzling.

I did the "No Proxy" and undid it since it made no difference. I am having trouble clearing Google Cookies.
