New themes do not "hold" if Firefox is closed and then reopened

I have selected the Firefox Alpenglow Theme (see attached). But if I close Firefox and then re-open Firefox, it reverts back to the 2nd attachment titled "New Firefox". I've tried using a different them, the same thing happens.

How can I keep the theme I want even when I close the browser and reopen it later?

Hmm, that's strange.

Do you have any Extensions installed that might be overriding the theme at startup? You can view, disable, and often remove unwanted or unknown extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions. On the right side, find the "Manage Your Extensions" heading.

If there is at least one extension before the next heading -- "Recommended Extensions" -- please continue:

Then cast a critical eye over the list below that heading. Any extensions Firefox installs for built-in features are hidden from this page, so everything listed here is your choice (and your responsibility) to manage. Anything that seems like it could be modifying Firefox's appearance, or that you just do not remember installing or why? If in doubt, disable (or remove). For your privacy and security, don't let mystery programs linger here.

One other thought: do you use Firefox Sync? Just wondering whether Sync may have saved that other theme from a different computer and somehow Sync is switching it back. You can stop themes from being synchronized. Here's how:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste themeid and pause while the list is filtered

Firefox should display two preferences:

  • extensions.activeThemeID should be set to firefox-alpenglow@mozilla.org
  • services.sync.prefs.sync.extensions.activeThemeID usually is true (meaning, yes, please sync this)

(3) Double-click the services.sync.prefs.sync.extensions.activeThemeID preference to switch the value from true to false so that the theme doesn't sync and can be set differently on each Firefox

Any improvement at the next startup?
