My preferences aren't being applied when I log in

For some reason, all of a sudden when I tried to open Firefox I'd get the message that my computer didn't recognize that URL. When I finally got into firefox (can't remember how), I refreshed firefox, so I lost all my preferences. I reset them, but they're not being applied. I've also lost my bookmarks. I've tried reading all the relevant help material, but I just get further and further in trouble. What do I do next?
