How can I configure my History so that the link I select doesn't instantly jump to the top/most recent?

Had an issue where my session restore information just vanished on me, but atleast all the History is still there for me to get back the pages I want. Trouble is, there's alot of pages involved, and, no matter how far back in your History you are looking, the instant you select one link to open in a new tab, that link instantly jumps you to top of the list, and you have to find your place all over again just to open the next link from that time period. It used to not be this way....I remember being able to select a link and it not affect where I was in my History whatsoever. Is there any way to configure my History so I can just select links without being moved to the top of the list every time?

Unfortunately, Firefox's history list always shows only the most recent visit to a site, and not every visit to a site. You could try an add-on or third party program to get the full list.

I found this extension recommended somewhere but haven't tried it myself. On the plus side, it says you can view all visits to the same URL during a date range. On the minus side, the screenshots look a bit cluttered.

That is how the History Manager works.

Norwell History Tools {web link} Norwell reveals the history that is otherwise hidden from you in native firefox history viewer. Displays all browsing history chronological/sequentially as timeline. Advanced search, wildcards and filters. Chrome and Firefox history import tool.

Norwell is interesting. It launches from an optional toolbar button (you can add it using: Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars) or the classic History menu (if you do not normally show the menu bar, tap the Alt key to show it temporarily) in a new browser tab.

By default it seems to show two days of history. To see more, either:

(1) Use the Norwell search bar above the list to find sites, or

(2) Click the Limits button to set the start and end dates, then click in the Norwell search bar and press Enter to update the list

There are lots of changes I would request if I needed to use this often, but hopefully I won't.

A possible workaround if you want to check the history is to use a Private Browsing mode window to open visited pages for inspection. In PB mode no new history is created, so nothing is changed.
