I cannot open jpeg's sent in Thunderbird emails. I need to preview on my desktop to open

I sent pictures in email using Picassa (now defunct) and google. They show up as a jpeg and will not display image. I have to save to my desktop, then open it. I get the same email on my iPhone, and it automatically shows the image. I went to Thunderbird privacy and set to allow, this had no effect.
