There are two ways to get to the Options page within Firefox on Windows:

  • click the "3-bar" menu button and then Options (it has a "gear" icon)
  • activate the classic menu bar by tapping the Alt key or F10, then use the Tools menu

If you prefer to have the menu bar displayed all the time, you can activate it temporarily, then use View > Toolbars > Menu bar. Or you can right-click a blank area of the tab bar (or the "+" button on the tab bar) and choose it there.

Does that help?

Doesn't work. I can't find a menu (3 bars) in foxfire so I am in chrome. The "three bars" has no "option" and no "gear". There is a "gear" symbol below the three bars, but it has no "option".

Even on this page of Foxfire that is no 3 bar menu.

What operating system do you use?

Do you have the Navigation Toolbar with the "3-bar" menu button at the far right?

On Mac and Linux you need to look for Preferences instead of Options.

  • Windows: Firefox/Tools > Options
  • Mac: Firefox > Preferences
  • Linux: Edit > Preferences

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in full screen mode (press F11 or Fn + F11 to toggle; Mac: Command+Shift+F).

When you are in full screen mode, hover the mouse to the top of the screen to make the Navigation Toolbar and Tab bar appear. You can use one of these to leave full screen mode:

  • click the Maximize button (top right corner of the Navigation Toolbar) to leave full screen mode
  • right-click empty space on a toolbar and choose "Exit Full Screen Mode"
  • press the F11 key

Okay, I'm only talking about Firefox.

This post assumes your OS is Windows 8.1

Usually the menu button it is on the right end of the main toolbar -- back button and address at the left end, menu icon at the right end. Is the toolbar displayed?

If you don't have the toolbar and Alt doesn't display the classic menu bar, Firefox might be in full screen view. You can press F11 to switch between full screen and normal views.

If you have a toolbar that is missing the menu button, and it's not a full screen problem, I suggest resetting the controls on the bar using Customize. To call that up, you can use one of these methods:

  • right-click a blank area of the tab bar (or the "+" button on the tab bar) and choose Customize
  • press and release the following keys in sequence:
    Alt v t c

At the bottom of the Customize tab, there should be a "Restore defaults" button to return the main toolbar to its initial layout.

Does that help?

I fixed it. The 3 bar menu tab did not work, but finally on some page I saw icons across the BOTTOM and one was a gear. That one had the options I needed.

That sounds like the built-in Firefox home page (its internal address is about:home).

I think you'll still want to fix the missing/broken menu button at some point.

Now that I am in foxfire and it is my default, the menu button has the "option" option. Feels like I was stuck in a Catch 22 loop. Thanks for trying to help. Julie
