FF randomly hangs, freezes, for varying periods of time, sometimes requiring a task-manager shutdown

My newly updated FF randomly freezes up. Sometimes on startup, sometimes while surfing, sometimes with the opening of a new tab, sometimes, sometimes, etc, etc, etc.........

I've uninstalled/reinstalled the browser (both from an existing download, as well as fresh) and add-ons, (as well as just disabling them). I've cleared caches, restored settings, and everything else I can think of 'til I'm blue in the face, and NOTHING has fixed the problem.

I've switched to Safari because I can't afford to waste the time, a dozen or more times a day, to wait for the browser to decide to work again, I simply have too much work to do. This is a new PC, a freshly installed OS (XPPro), well protected and monitored for viruses and malware.

Please, please, PLEASE, for the love of God, will somebody tell me how to make it work?!?!?!?!? Safari and Chrome are simply no subsititute!
