On my iMac, I cannot update to the latest Firefox version (I have 3.6). Each time, the system states that I do not have the necessary permission to access certain items, though I am the administrator and sole user of my computer! The same applies to my MacBook! I can't imagine what I need to do to access the update, that downloads and then blocks.

Download a new copy of the Firefox program: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html

Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean reinstall.

Install the new version that you have downloaded.

Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data.

I've tried that. I cannot drag the Firefox logo out of the application folder and into the trash bin. I am the administrator so that should not be a problem. I've made sure no versions of Firefox are running under anyone's profile. I've looked at the Force Quit command to see if anything is running that is part of Firefox. I'e also been able to drag and drop into trash other programs so this problem seems unique to my installation of Firefox.

So I cannot get rid of the old version of Firefox and I cannot update to the new one either.

Did you check the permissions of those files in Finder?
