Is there a way to recover tabs that disappeared when closing Firefox and starting again?

more options

I see some older threads about this but that advice no longer seems to apply. Suddenyl out of the blue, for the first time ever, I opened Firefox this morning and horror of all horrors - all my tabs gone. And despite having the setting "When Firefox starts: Show your windows and tabs from last time" still being the selected option - Firefox will no longer reopen with previous tabs - I only get the start page. I figured I would trawl through my history and re-open them all - but nope - all gone again when I close and open. I followed the instructions on a previous thread (a year old and archived) to use recovery.js or previous.js in the backup folder but there is no 'sessionstore.js' in the profile folder. And if I copy previous.js (which has the date of my orderly shutdown last night) into the profiles folder and rename it sessionstore.js it makes no difference. It just sits there with last nights date - no matter if I open and close Firefox. So to summarise I have a file in "sessionstore-backups" called previous.js which is date and time stamped from my last successful session but renaming and moving that into the folder above makes no difference. And when I started - there was no sessionstore.* in there anyway. The closest file with that name is 'sessionCheckpoints.json'

I can see references to my tabs in 'previous.js' but cannot get those tabs to open. And the option to restore is naturally greyed out. Any advice? Firefox v55.03 (32-bit)

OK I have solved this myself if anyone is interested. Please note the specifics of my case - I shut my computer down in an orderly fashion and when I started it up the next day and opened Firefox all my tabs were gone. And no matter what I did it would no longer reopen closed tabs. Any attempt to restore the backup as is well documented in these forums failed as the sessionstore.js file mentioned simply did not exist. And creating one by renaming and copying a backup did nothing either. And that is when I discovered that there was already another Firefox running as a process. I discovered this because I had decided to abandon Firefox (after being loyal for many years) and try out Opera. And when I installed Opera it asked me if I wanted to import my bookmarks and settings from Firefox which I did - only it failed - saying I had to close Firefox to allow the import. But it was already closed. And that is when I invoked the Taskmanager and discovered Firefox running - despite no visual evidence of it. I killed the process and when I re-opened Firefox - voila - all my tabs returned. I am still going to give Opera a trial though - Firefox has become another Chrome - bloated and slow. This incident may be the push I needed to try something new.

I could not find a way to edit my question so I must add a second one here: Additionally why is Firefox no longer storing my tabs despite being set to do so. It suddenly refuses.
