Hello,

Before one of the recent updates, if I prematurely deleted a bookmark, I could go to "bookmark backups" (hidden away in C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles) and find several recent versions of my bookmarks, in a very easy to follow format when opened with Notepad, with "title=" and "URL="...now, they are a mess, looking like this: !@#$%...yes, like cussing in a comic strip panel.

So how can I get back to the more easily understood bookmark backups? I used them in this way (visually versus code) quite a lot.

Thanks very much!

The automatically created JSON backups are in a compressed .jsonlz4 format and it isn't possible to open such a file in another application as you would have to expand the file. This is similar to packing files in a ZIP archive. Backups that you create manually in the Bookmarks Manager (Library) are still in a readable text .json format.

  • note that you can open such an uncompressed bookmarks-####-##-##_xxxx_$$$$.json file in the Scratchpad (Firefox/Tools > Web Developer) and can click the "Pretty Print" button to format the file and add line breaks for readability.
  • note that the xxxx in the name denotes the total number of bookmarks in the file, including folders and separators.
