I can not get firefox to start. I tried to uninstall but get message firefox must be closed to proceed. Same message when I try to reinstall.

see item #38 concerning closing Firefox properly. Regardless if Firefox fails to close you will need to use the Windows Task Manager to close Firefox.

Try to run Firefox once as Administrator to see if that helps.

If files already have been downloaded then remove the files in the updates and updates\0 folder.
You can also delete active-update.xml and possibly updates.xml, if present.

(%LOCALAPPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox)

If there are problems with updating then best is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version and delete the Firefox program folder to remove any leftover files.

Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
