dinkytown.net wants current java when selecting a calculator. I have uninstalled and reinstalled java and still come up with same message and can't access the calculators using firefox but can with MIE.

I don't see Java in your list of plugins at all actually. It should show up in Tools | Add-ons | Plugins (see screenshot).

Can you find it via Windows Control Panel? If it's there, click the Update tab and then "Update Now" button.
