I get an SMTP error when I try to send an email and it's always the same cause. (SMTP username)

I have my own domain that I use but I use Zoho and go through them. So I have multiple email accounts which are used for different things going to the same outgoing SMTP

The trouble is I get a SMTP error all the time. I can fix it but that breaks the other emails. So I have to reset the username most every-time I send. That in turn changes all of them.

Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS 68.10.0 (64-bit)

Example: X@mydomain.me Y@mydomain.me Z@mydomain.me

All using SMTP: smtp.zoho.com

You should have each account sending through an smtp with the same User Name. Tools/Account Settings, select an account in the left pane, look at Outgoing Server (SMTP). Account X should send on smtpX that has the User Name for X; click Edit SMTP server to check. If you need to create more smtp servers, select Outgoing Server (SMTP) at the bottom left of Account Settings. Give each smtp a unique Description so it's easier to match accounts with the smtp.

This really should be addressed. Under servers it only shows the IMAP. I was able to add a description to the smtp server and that did seem to fix the issue. There isn't an option to do that when you set up a new account. (I added one that I hadn't previously added with the same domain). Also, it has a default server which I think may have been the problem. I wish you could remove that, not the server, but the default status. I don't see anywhere to do that. Let me know if I'm mistaken.

@sfhowes I do appreciate the help. I'm going to wait a few days before saying this is solved.

The Default smtp server was defined at the time when it was possible to have accounts from several providers send through the same smtp, e.g. the one for your ISP. It's still relevant in cases such as sending over smtp from a newsgroup.

Although it's not 'official policy', I never use the full setup wizard to add accounts; I go Offline from File/Offline, enter credentials in File/New/Existing Mail Account, click Manual config., then Advanced config., and enter all settings according to the provider's instructions. At the end, go back online to connect.

@sfhowes it's all wizard (gui) stuff to me. Unless it's in a plain text config file

The account setup wizard does not give you the option to change the smtp server's description and many other account options. That's where the Account Settings tab comes in, so that you can make additional changes to suit your use case, because everyone's use case is different. In Account Settings (gui), you get to change the description for each of your smtp servers to differentiate between them and to make sure each account uses the correct smtp server. I suggest you familiarise yourself with the different sections and settings available in Account Settings. There is a lot to discover.
