Thunderbird hangs at startup

At startup on my laptop running Win10 Thunderbird hangs while seemingly completing background tasks. During this time it is completely unresponsive - no buttons work (not even window minimisation). It used to work fine, but I am becoming frustrated by it. It is even worse now on my desktop where, again, it used to work fine. Would complete removal and re-installation help and how would I remove any trace residual files that mighht influence a new installation?

I have the same problem...hangs with Not Responding status. Seems to have begun with TB 45.4.0.
