I keep getting message log on to server imap.googlemail.com failed how can I fix this?

I had to change my password on gmail. after this my Thunderbird email stopped working and I keep getting this error message. When I enter the new password it just keeps going back to log on to server imap.googlemail.com failed. Can anyone help?

It may help to remove old stored passwords so Thunderbird can't try to use them.

Tools|Options|Security|Passwords→Saved Passwords.

Locate and remove any and all entries for your googlemail account; use the filter box at the top.
