Originally to flash: i don't know if it's your problem, win8's problem, or ff's, but on xp the default was to ask me to crash flash, and now it does everything (=making mozilla not respond) to NOT ask me that, and as it's 'not responding' i don't even get a choice.

besides for possibly the last solution, all the responses were irrelevant/didn't work for me.

I'm now closing this thread being as it would appear that Mozilla was freezing instead of asking me to crash flash because in those instances it (flash) was being flooded with information.

as that is not a problem anymore, I'm closing this thread, but would still appreciate anyone with a solution to this (in case i have need of it in the future).

Hello,

Some problems with Flash video playback can be resolved by disabling hardware acceleration in your Flash Player settings. (See this article for more information on using the Flash plugin in Firefox).

To disable hardware acceleration in Flash Player:

  1. Go to this Adobe Flash Player Help page.
  2. Right-click on the Flash Player logo on that page.
  3. Click on Settings in the context menu. The Adobe Flash Player Settings screen will open.
  4. Click on the icon at the bottom-left of the Adobe Flash Player Settings window to open the Display panel.

The image "fpSettings1.PNG" does not exist.
  5. Remove the check mark from Enable hardware acceleration.
  6. Click Close to close the Adobe Flash Player Settings Window.
  7. Restart Firefox.

This Flash Player Help - Display Settings page has more information on Flash Player hardware acceleration, if you're interested.

Does this solve the problem? Let us know.

Hi GodinHeaven, is this an option that is offered by one of your add ons? This is not a native feature to Firefox in version 27. If this is the caseConfiguration Options for Add-ons and Troubleshoot issues with plugins like Flash or Java to fix common Firefox problems are helpful starting points.

1) it IS native to ff 3.6.x+

it says: 'a plugin is not responding'

and gives two buttons: stop / continue.

my problem is that it usually DOESN'T give me that notification, and makes ff hang, instead of letting me crash flash.

We're sorry to hear that your Firefox seems to be crashing when you open it. Please perform the following steps to give us a crash report ID that helps us find out more about the cause of the crash.

  1. Press the following shortcut to get a Run window: [Windows] + [R]. This should bring up a window that contains a text field.
  2. In that text field, enter %APPDATA% and press Enter. An explorer window should open.
  3. From that explorer window, double-click on the Mozilla folder, then double-click on Firefox and then on Crash reports. Double-click on submitted.
  4. Now, you should see a list of files that contain reports. Go to View > Arrange Icons by > Modified to get the most recent files at the top of the window.
  5. Open the most recent 5 files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
  6. Paste each ID with bp- into the reply window on the forums.

Thanks in advance!

You can find more information and troubleshooting steps in the Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly) article.

Hey GodinHeaven,

I think I may understand better now, flash is not crashing. When Flash crashes these are the ways we know to prevent it from happening again. Adobe Flash plugin has crashed - Prevent it from happening again

It may have been an update to Flash that does not allow that option, however if this is an add on that allows this search out that add on.

Also Firefox 3.6 is really insecure and I highly recommend to update to Firefox 27.

apparently i was EXTREMELY unclear. i'm using ff 27, and adobe flash. when my memory gets filled instead of getting something like this: http://michaelcrum.web713.discountasp.net/files/SNAGHTML218d472d_634705519718110350.png

it simply stops responding.

note: the problem isn't simply that i never get the message rather that i get way less often than i should meaning that ff stopped responding instead of giving me a message like the one in the image. i DO get it occasionally.

I am not sure if that script would stop running in the plug in container or if it might be related to the specific installation of that plug in. As you said, on occasion it does this, but I do not know the steps to reproduce the issue. In order to bypass the plug in container you can test and disable it on the about:config page with the instructions below:

  1. In the Location bar, type about:config and press Enter. The about:config "This might void your warranty!" warning page may appear.
  2. Click I'll be careful, I promise!, to continue to the about:config page.
  3. dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.npctrl.dll set to false will bypass the plug in container for silverlight.

Try to set the Flash plug to click-to-play by setting the permissions for Flash to "Ask To Activate" in "Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Plugins".
That way you can activate the Flash plugin when you need it via the Lego block icon on the location bar.

If you do not have the "Ask To Activate" choice for a plugin on the "Firefox > Add-ons Plugins" page then you can enable click-to-play by setting the plugins.click_to_play pref to true on the about:config page.
