Firefox opens multiple (up to 30) windows despite following help for "Firefox keeps opening many tabs or windows," & there's no malware. How can I fix this?

My computer is a Dell Inspiron 620 running Windows 7 Professional. 64-bit. I have ZoneAlarm Security Suite, which does daily virus scans, and Webroot SpySweeper, which does a daily scan for spyware. Neither has found any virus or threatening spyware (just cookies I could delete myself). I keep running various deep scans, including Malwarebytes, TDSS Killer and BitDefender Removal Tool TDSS TDL4, and no malware shows up. I've cleared cookies, cache, etc. and restarted.

I made a new desktop shortcut, which helped for a couple of times opening Firefox, then the problem came back.

I downloaded and ran Revo Uninstaller in Advanced setting, then reinstalled Firefox. Helped a couple of times, then the problem came back.

I checked the Firefox help link. No programs are set to use Firefox. I deleted mimeTypes.rdf according to the directions, then restarted Firefox. Same problem remains.

I've completely cleared history, but after once or twice opening Firefox, the problem returns. I've restarted my computer after the above.

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

Delete the files sessionstore.js [2] and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well. Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

Thanks, Cor-el! I deleted the two sessionstore files (.js and .bak). There were no files that you described in your second paragraph. I closed Firefox, then opened it. Same problem.

I went back, opened Troubleshooting Information and the Containing Folder. Then I closed Firefox (which had been open when I deleted the two files above), deleted the two files and closed the containing folder. I opened Firefox four times, and each time only one window has opened :) I think you have solved my problem. Thanks again, for you help and for your quick reply!

Oh no--the problem came back again: Firefox opens lots of windows when I only ask for one :(

Thanks, mha007! I've restarted Firefox in Safe mode five times, and had cleared cookies & cache and restored the default home page. Firefox is opening fine. It is also opening correctly (several times so far) in "normal" mode. Well, it took a couple of days for the problem to resurface before, so I'll keep using Firefox and see if it holds. Thanks for your help and quick response!

You are correct about needing to watch the number of clicks, but that wasn't my problem. You know I surely wasn't clicking 30 times! The problem happens even when I right-click on the desktop icon and choose "Open." Thanks for your reply.
