Firefox 4 login manager (Saved passwords) only seems to work with one Username/password per site. The Norton toolbar used to ask which login I wanted to use. How do I make Firefox do that?

Firefox should ask to store each name and password that you enter on a web page.

Make sure that you not run Firefox in (permanent) Private Browsing - Use Firefox without saving history mode.

  • You enter Private Browsing mode if you select: Tools > Options > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Never Remember History"
  • To see all History and Cookie settings, choose: Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting Firefox will: Use custom settings for history
  • Uncheck: [ ] "Permanent Private Browsing mode"

Some sites like PayPal and bank sites use autocomplete="off" to prevent Firefox from saving and filling the name and the password.

If a site uses autocomplete="off" then look at this article for a bookmarklet to remove that autocomplete attribute and Firefox will offer to store the name and password.

I've done all that. You have missed the point.

Firefox DOES ask to SAVE Username/Password when I log-in with a DIFFERENT IDENTITY on the same site. However, Firefox DOES NOT provide automatic LOG-IN when there is MORE THAN ONE IDENTITY for any give site. If I delete all but one identity for a site, Firefox will complete the log-in details. Firefox only provides automatic log-in if there is one identity for any given site.

You can't expect Firefox to guess with identity to use if there is more than one. You need to double click the name field and choose the name from the list if there are more names saved. Firefox will fill the password or use the tab key to go to the password field.

We are on the right track - I have to prompt Firefox to offer the list of alternative log-ins. Of course I don't expect Firefox to guess which log-in I want to use. But why the extra step? The Norton toolbar automatically offers the list of alternatives and I click the one I want. HOWEVER, Firefox does not handle multiple log-ins correctly. For one site that I use, when prompted Firefox lists any saved username that is similar to the true alternatives for that site. On another site, when prompted Firefox only lists some of the alternative log-ins. Before you ask, I have checked the Saved Passwords and everything is listed correctly there. (Yes, I have also checked exceptions.)

Later: Further research. Start a new session. Go to site A which has three log-ins. Try the double-click prompt - nothing. Use each identity in turn (type the user name, Firefox remembers the password): log-in, log-out; log-in, log-out; log-in, log-out. The double-click prompt now works correctly within that session, including closing the site A tab and re-opening it. UNLESS you log-in on another site. As soon as you have done that Firefox no longer responds to the double-click prompt on site A.
