There is a space for the bookmarks toolbar, but it is empty!
I am in FF 4.0 on Mac OS X and trying to get back to square 1 with toolbars and addons. I created a new toolbar for addons so that I would be able to see them all, as I do in Chrome. (I cannot figure out how to make the navigation toolbar is take up less space to show the current URL). So, now I have a bar for my addons, but the bookmarks toolbar is empty! There is a space for it, but it is blank. When I look at View | Toolbars, there are checkmarks next to Navigation, Addons, Boookmarks and Developer. So, it is there but empty. I dragged a bookmarks icon from the Customize Toolbars set into the toolbar area, but when I click it my bookmarks folders that should be in the toolbar appear in a sidebar that pops up.

Check that you still have the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" placed on the Bookmarks Toolbar
- Make sure that you have the "Bookmarks Toolbar" visible: "View > Toolbars"
- Check in "View > Toolbars > Customize" that the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
- If the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the Customize window onto the Bookmarks Toolbar
- If you do not see the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" then click the "Restore Default Set" button
