The following Thunderbird error just started today for FOUR out of FIVE of my accounts. The error reads: "The stat command did not succeed. Error getting message number and sizes. Mail server pop.gmail.com responded. Invalid credentials." Connection Security is: SSL/TLS Authentication Method is: OAuth2 Nothing was changed in several weeks.

I saw this error was posted before but NO ONE solved the problem.

Please help.

Matt, thank you for your reply BUT... My settings at preference --> Cookies were as follows both before and after the OAuth setup change: 1- Accept cookies from sites but with exceptions listed in the drop down 2- Always accept 3rd party sites 3- Keep cookies until I close Thunderbird.

The only way to stop the STAT error message from showing up for the four email addresses involved is to change the Authentication method from OAuth to Normal Password.

Any further help you can provide will be most welcome. Until that time, I have to stay at "Normal Password".

Did you read the google document https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6010255?hl=en

You choice will work for no longer than the 30 May. So be warned. Now is a good time to investigate what on your system makes things not work. For a start I would try the Default cookies settings.

I would also try using it with the operating system in safe mode with networking. Antivirus products and various so called security software have a long history of intercepting and hacking encrypted connections (they generally call it scanning), but regardless of the intent the result is frequently chaos.

Microsoft offer instructions on doing that here https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/start-your-pc-in-safe-mode-in-windows-92c27cff-db89-8644-1ce4-b3e5e56fe234

So, with Thunderbird email not working correctly, the primary reason may be that your service provider does not support the newer TLS network encryption protocols. Hence, users will be unable to send or receive emails. The solution for this issue can lie in simply rolling Thunderbird back to an earlier version.

Gmail supports modern encryption including TLS to V1.3.

It is poor advice indeed to suggest using an old version for that particular problem as well. There are hidden preferences for modifying and reducing the TLS version that can be used in a scenario where a mail provider has not updated their security in more than a decade.
