I use the site Goodreads regularly. Yesterday in the morning I went there as I normally do and all was well. In the afternoon, the site appeared as text only. I was able to access using Edge and Chrome. So, I followed the instruction given to troubleshoot problems with websites appearances incl cookies, cache and history removal, fiddled with the zoom percentage, with my extensions, performance, etc I couldn't find how to change hardware acceleration, but my system is pretty new. I'm not sure what change between the morning and afternoon, but I know I didn't touch the settings in Firefox at all. I even refreshed FFox and unistalled and reinstalled it, but to no avail. Could the website have a problem and the cause not be mine at all? Any other suggestions? I dropped a line to the website, but my experience with them getting back to me has not been positive. Thanks a lot.

Hi

This usually happens when some CSS files are blocked or otherwise fail to load.
I think you already tried the most obvious like clearing cache and cookies.

Did you try to bypass the cache and possibly "Forget About This Site" ?
Did you try to close and restart Firefox or reboot the computer or power the router off/on ?

If you use extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) that can block content (Adblock Plus, NoScript, Disconnect, Ghostery, Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin) always make sure such extensions do not block content.

Firefox shows a purple shield instead of a gray shield at the left end of the location/address bar in case Enhanced Tracking Protection is blocking content.
You can click shield icon for more detail and possibly disable the protection.
You can check the Web Console for messages about blocked content.

You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
  • press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

You can remove all data stored in Firefox for a specific domain via "Forget About This Site" in the right-click context menu of an history entry ("History -> Show All History" or "View -> Sidebar -> History").

Using "Forget About This Site" will remove all data stored in Firefox for this domain like history and cookies and passwords and exceptions and cache, so be cautious. If you have a password or other data for that domain that you do not want to lose then make sure to backup this data or make a note.

You can't recover from this 'forget' unless you have a backup of involved files.

If you revisit a 'forgotten' website then data for that website will be saved once again.

You can boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support to see if that has effect in case security software is causing problems.

Thanks for the information you provided. I will certainly keep the above for future reference.

I did restart Firefox and shutdown after I did a reinstall, but nothing was helpful yesterday. But just a few minutes ago, I logged into the website and it was working properly, so maybe it wasn't my issue at all.

Really appreciate the help.
