Hello, I have been having double folders for a while but now I just saw that I have 3 Junk and 3 Sent folders. Now 2 of each are yellow folders and the Original Folders that came with TB. The Junk is like a Teardrop icon shape and the Sent is a monitor screen icon. I tried several times to delete the Yellow folders but TB does not let me delete them, and now I have the Yellow folders of each in the Trash and now I have each Yellow folder in the list. I have no idea how they keep getting there.

Can you please help me to remove the Yellow Folders and keep the TB icons folders?

I had to buy a new desktop that is not in yet and I am cleaning my TB to have a smooth transfer/install in the new computer, hope this one doesn't crash before I get the new one, it's on its last lap! I have contacted Mozilla for a smooth transition for the new desktop.

Thank you for your help, I'm waiting for your help and I truly appreciate it all.

Thanks again Toad-Hall, it took me all this time to realize what is going on, yes it is in the Browser of Spectrum Webmail that the folders are in, I had not notice their tiny down arrow to open a subfolder (s) and they are there in the Inbox as subfolders of the Inbox!!!

I chatted for help, I called the Tech dept. and they are still transitioning to the newer Webmail. The tech that talked to me could not delete those folders just like that, "it has to be done by the higher up" than him and they are working on it.

So after all this time I now do understand what is happening in TB when I delete emails, they come back to the Inbox (marked as read) it is Spectrum's webmail program that is messed up, not TB.

Thank you so much for your time, explanations and all your efforts to help me. Again, I truly appreciate it all.

I will mark this Question/Help as being Marked as Solved! Thanks again!

Okay, it looks like no one can help me fix TB, and now, this week I had two yellow folders in the INBOX! I deleted them and of course TB did not allow the delete, but at last it deleted them the sixth day I deleted them, and now they show as sub-folders in the Trash Folder. And now for the main reason I am here, I was cleaning my Trash Folder by deleting the emails I didn't want in the Trash folder, I then went to my Inbox, all of a sudden all the mails that were in the Trash suddenly came up in the INBOX, it did not delete from the Trash Folder but moved them back in the inbox. Please can someone fix this in TB. Thank you for your time and efforts.

The account you are talking about is an Imap mail account according to the image you provided showing directory in 'ImapMail' folder.

Imap mail account show you a remote view of what is on the server.

Did you ever at some point have a pop mail account and swap it over to an imap mail account by changing the server settings on the pop account? OR did you set up the imap account as a new existing mail account from scratch?

'Junk' folder name is usually only used by Thunderbird when it creates pop mail accounts. So, I'm supprised to see you having a 'Junk' folder in an Imap mail account. But 'JunkMail' and 'SentMail' sounds likely to be default folders used by the server. You cannot delete default server folders. They will be recreated because they are on the server and you are subscribed to seeing them. To see any imap account folder, you need to subscribe to see them. If you stop subscribing to see a server folder then it will disappear from Thunderbird, but it will still be on the server visible via webmail account.

The point is this, you seem to have a mish mash of folders as if you have incorrectly created the imap mail account.

Logon to webmail account via a browser to see what you have on server. Post an image of what you see.

Imap accounts should only show what is on server, so in theory, you can simply delete an imap mail account, restart Thunderbird and add a new existing mail account and set it up as imap from the start. Then subscribe to see folders on the server. Note: default folders will include Inbox, SentMail, Etc.

Thank you Toad-Hall for your reply.

Starting from the start, I had Verizon for my email provider before for I had TB. Verizon was leaving our area, and Time Warner Company (TWC) took over, then TWC was sold to Spectrum from whom I am now using for my internet provider. So it went from Verizon to Spectrum TWC no other in between. So I don't know what happened in the process of changing provider. I never had these moving multiple folders before that are appearing here and there, sometimes they are in Trash, sometimes in Drafts, sometimes in Inbox as sub-folders, I try to delete them but TB shows it cannot delete them, (an attachment pic will show) although 4 days ago I deleted them from the Inbox as sub-folders and they are now showing in the Trash folder and have not moved from there yet.

Now I do not remember seeing those multiple folders when I installed TB right from Verizon, I did not really realize I had multiple folders, not until they started to move around as sub-folders here and there, and that moving around folders got my attention late last year, when they were in the Trash Folder (with the waste basket icon) Folder.

Now about the Webmail from the Browser, I wrote down what I see with explanations on them: In Browser TWC I have: Inbox, Drafts, Sent Mail, Deleted Items, Juknmail, SentMail, Junk Mail, then after them there is a Manage Folders with: Archives, Junk, my personal folders I created (Keeping, My Personal Folders, Pogo) then it shows a Sent folder I did not create last, Waiting, I created.

So, Spectrum's ".TWC" shows I created Folders for (Archives-I did not create, Junk-I did not create, Keeping-I created, My Personal Folders-I created, Pogo-I created, Sent-I did not create, Waiting-I created).

I'm sending you attachments with wiped out personal folders for my privacy.

I don't know what to do with what you explained to me above, I understand of bit of it but not all, but if there is something I can do to fix these moving Folders that are not of use, please let me know what to do, "step by step" with instructions and I will do it!

Thank you so much for your time and efforts, I truly appreciate it.

It seems likely you did something to swap a pop to an imap mail account, but it all went wrong.

The server uses 'Deleted Items' for emails you delete. The server uses 'Sent Mail' for emails you send. The server uses 'Junk Mail' for spam and junk. But you do not seem to show any of these folders in Thunderbird, so they have not been subscribed to be seen. You need to subscribe to see them.

In Thunderbird Folder Pane: The 'Trash' folder; the 'Sent' folder; the 'Junk' folder are not the default server folders, they were ones you either added/imported or was a left over from when this was a pop mail account. After setting everything and moving emails out of those folders they need to be removed.

The 'SentMail' and 'JunkMail' seem to be default server folders; maybe occuring when server swapped from Verizon to Spectrum at some point. So whist they can be removed from the Thunderbird view, they cannot be removed off server.

I'm not sure whether you are using the correct 'Drafts' folder at this point as the name is the same.

DO THE FOLLOWING: First you need to get the correct emails into the correct folders and make sure those emails are really in those correct folders on the server (seen via webmail).

Check if 'Drafts' in Thunderbird is the same folder as used on server.

  • Right click on imap mail acccount in Folder Pane and select 'Subscribe'
  • click on 'Refresh'
  • select/highlight the following folders: 'Drafts', 'Deleted Items', 'Sent Mail' and 'Junk Mail'.
  • click on 'Subscribe'.

Now remove the unwanted folders.

  • select/highlight 'SentMail' and 'Junkmail'
  • click on 'Unsubscribe'
  • click on 'OK'

Now make sure the imap mail account is using correct folders.

  • Right click on imap mail acccount in Folder Pane and select 'Settings'
  • Select 'Server Settings'

When I delete a message:

  • select 'Move it to this folder' and choose the 'Deleted Items on imap mail account'.
  • Select 'Copies & Folders'
  • Select 'Place a copy in'
  • Select 'Other' and choose 'Sent Mail on imap mail account'

Drafts and Templates:

  • Select 'Other' and choose 'Drafts on imap mail account'
  • Select 'Junk Settings'
  • Select 'Move new junk messages to'
  • Select 'Other' and choose the 'Junk Mail on imap mail account'
  • Select 'Synchronisation & Storage'
  • Select 'keep messages for this account on this computer'
  • click on 'Advanced'
  • select 'Inbox', 'Drafts', 'Sent Mail', 'Deleted Items' and any other folder you need.

But, do not select any of the following if they exist in list 'Sent', 'Trash','Junk', 'SentMail', 'Junkmail'.

  • click on 'OK'
  • Click on 'OK' to save and close Account Settings.

  • Move emails you have in 'Sent' folder and put them in 'Sent Mail'.
  • Move emails from 'Junk' and put them in 'Junk Mail'
  • Move emails from 'Trash' and put them in 'Deleted Items'

Now remove additional unwanted folders.

  • Right click on imap mail acccount in Folder Pane and select 'Subscribe'
  • select/highlight 'Sent', 'Junk','Trash'
  • click on 'Unsubscribe'
  • click on 'OK'

I've mentioned 'Trash' as it is not a server folder, although it is not shown/ visible in image under webmail account 'Manage Folders', but it may be further down and hidden.

  • Logon to webmail.
  • Delete 'Sent', 'Junk', Trash',

these folders are not the server default folders and so should be easily deleted.

In webmail, leave 'SentMail' and 'Junkmail' alone. I do not think you can remove these as they look like old default folders.

Restart Thunderbird.

Hello again Toad-Hall, Thank you for your reply and help. Yes I had a POP server way back 25 plus years ago, using the phone line internet, changed to slow internet with phone no more busy signal people calling here, (can't remember the names right now) with the same company. Then to Verizon High Speed Internet. Now to make sure you know what is working since beginning with TB, and you see which folders are working, and before I do anything when you about starting to fix it, right now in the "Thunderbird Folder Pane" as it is and has been from first installation of TB to replace Verizon, the Draft folder (with icon of a page) the Sent folder (a square with blue center icon) the Trash (waste basket icon) the Junk folder (orange teardrop icon) are all the folders that are working correctly, they have been from the beginning of TB. All the other folders with a yellow folder icon, those are all empty and they have not done anything, they are just there, like you wrote. So yes something went wrong, and I remember when the Time Warner Company, now Spectrum guy was setting my Email account they had a hard time, "it's not working" he kept saying to the person he was talking to on his phone as he was doing the steps he was told to do!

-Now, the Drafts is the same in browser's TWC Webmail and Thunderbird's, -The Sent Mail in TWC is not correct, the mail I had sent shows in the Sent folder that is in the "Manage Folders", (my personal folders) it shows after the Pogo, the mails I sent are in that Sent folder in the Manage Folders pane. -The Junk folder in TWC is the one under Manage Folders also, my junk mail shows in there as they do in TB. -The Deleted Items in TWC is the Trash in TB.

Now when is browser TWC I right click and there is not Subscribe, if that is where you want me to do the Subscribe! In TB there is no Subscribe but I see "Favorite Folder", and all the other folders I should Unsubscribe. I don't know what to do now! Is there something else I can do?

Thanks again for your time and efforts !

I'm back to adding a PrintScreen below. I went to TWC Webmail and looked in the Elements to see if I could find the word, Unsubscribe, there is non, but I can "delete element" of this highlighted folder I was in, the Junkmail. I was wondering if that would work if I cannot find Subscribe or Unsubscribe places. Just a thought I had. I also went to Spectrum for Support and there is no place where I can create a ticket for help!  :(

re : The 'Sent Mail' in TWC is not correct, the mail I had sent shows in the Sent folder that is in the "Manage Folders",

I know, but that's because you are not using the correct folder. Your account settings are telling thunderbird to put them in 'Sent'. If you do as I've advised then you will be using the correct folder. the 'Sent' is not a default server folder, it is under Manage Folders because it is a folder you added. It is an old pop account folder. The same goes for Junk etc. I've already described this. I'm trying to sort out the mess in your imap account where you are not using default folders for certain things.

As I've already stated, someone imported all your old pop folders into the imap account or did something unusual in how they swapped a pop to an imap account, but they are not default imap server folders, so you should not be using them. This is what makes me wonder if they swapped a pop into an imap, because why would they have altered a new imap account settings to use those folders instead of the correct ones. It's a wonder you have not had more issues.

re :Now when is browser TWC I right click and there is not Subscribe No. I'm not talking about webmail.Webmail already has the folders as it is a more direct view of the server.

You have to Subscribe in Thunderbird to be able to see a virtual view of those folders on the server.

re :In TB there is no Subscribe but I see "Favorite Folder", That's because you are right clicking on a folder like 'Inbox'. I did not say right click on various random folders. I told you to :

  • Right click on imap mail acccount in Folder Pane and select 'Subscribe'

The imap mail account name will probably be the email address. It contains all your folders like 'Inbox etc'.

Please read instructions carefully and only do what they say. However, I'm surprised you do not know about subscribing. See two images below.

All instructions are clear and specific and needed to be done in the order stated. Do not deviate.

You need to stop using incorrect folders. Incorrect folders can be deleted very easily and this could end up with you losing emails.

So start again from the begining and please read instructions and follow them.

The 'Subscribe' option can also be located via three routes: All are equal to each other, there is no preference.

  • Right click on imap mail account name in Folder Pane and select 'Subscribe'.

OR

  • via 'Menu Bar' toolbar : 'File' > 'Subscribe' and make sure correct imap account is selected.

OR

  • via 'Mail Toolbar' toolbar: 'Menu icon' > 'File' > 'Subscribe' and make sure correct imap account is selected.

Hello again, Please don't scold me for not knowing about Subscribe, I did not know where it was, I'm a 73 female with kids living far away from me, Thank you so much though for adding the pictures to let me know where it is. I've started to fix but had to stop, now in the list of folders in the Subscribe, all folders have a Check mark on them, even my Personal Folders, so do I uncheck everything before I start to Subscribe? Aslo, there is"NO" Deleted Items Folder in the list of folders, there is only one Trash folder in the list and in the Pane of folders in TB, but there is a Deleted Items Folder in TWC's webmail though, I saw it yesterday. What should I do now with the non existant Deleted Items folder in TB? Thank you for your patience, and time and efforts, again!

re :in the list of folders in the Subscribe, all folders have a Check mark on them.... You mention there is no 'Deleted Items'. Do you see the 'Junk Mail' folder and the 'Sent Mail' folder in that list? If no then we'll come back to that.

re: so do I uncheck everything before I start to Subscribe No, you do not need to unsubscribe everything. Carry on with the following first to get rid of unwanted 'SentMail' and 'Junkmail' folders.

  • click on 'Refresh' button
  • select/highlight 'SentMail' and 'Junkmail' folders in the list
  • click on 'Unsubscribe'
  • click on 'OK'

It does not have Junk Mail, nor Sent Mail. I has Junkmail and Junk, and it has SentMail and Sent. I Refreshed, I highlighted both folders, I unsubscribed from SentMail and Junkmail (check mark gone), and they do not unsubscribed, I closed TB and I did it again and then this time I restarted my pc and it did not unsubscribed them doing this either. I even unsubscribed them from the Trash Folder where they are seen there also, it did not work doing that either.

OK. This means the 'SentMail' and the 'Junkmail' are definately default folders. It is odd that Spectrum webmail have two sets set up, but this could be something to do will when they migrated folders from verizon over. In a nutshell only Spectrum can remove them if they were willing. The user - you - cannot remove/delete any default folder only folders you create in other words anything shown in webmail account under 'Manage Folders'.

So what can you do? At this point you can choose to use 'SentMail' and the 'Junkmail' as your folders that store Sent and Junk mail instead of the 'Sent' and 'Junk' folders. Tell me if you decide to do this and I'll tell you the process. OR you can keep using the current folders - 'Sent' and 'Junk', but be wary that they are not default folders and therefore could be easily deleted and try the following to 'hide' the 'SentMail' and 'Junkmail' from your view in thunderbird.

For each folder you want to see:

  • Right click on each folder in Folder Pane and select 'Favorite Folder' option.

Obviously you need to do this for every folder except 'SentMail' and 'Junkmail'. When you have done that you need to change the view by doing the following:

  • 'Menu icon' > 'Folders' > select 'Favorite' (not 'Favorite Folder')

There is nothing stopping you from trying the above 'Favorite' option as swapping the 'Menu icon' > 'Folders' > select 'All' will revert you back to current view.

Okay I marked the Folders that are working since day one as Favorite, and then when I went to Menu, Folders, Favorite, it removed all my other Folders including the Hotmail's.

So this means that it will stay like that, the only reason why I to ask help here is that the multiple folders I had deleted, once, I don't remember exactly what year, they went in the Trash and I could not delete them in the Trash Folder. And lately, about a month or so ago, I would read my emails, and then delete them but when I would delete them in the Trash they would go into my Inbox! So Thank you so much for your time and all the nice efforts you showed me, I guess I will have to leave it as it is, "working" at least. I may also later on call Spectrum if I need to. So best regards to you and yours, and may you be blessed for helping me. Mark this as Helpful and finished please.

Hello Toad-Hall,

I am back with the same problem, but I did call Spectrum and I was told that they were (are now) transitioning to a newer Webmail Program, so the tech helped me to remove the multiple folders and they finally figured out what caused them, also the tech kept saying I had created those folders that were showing in My Folders area. But now they go away when I click to Delete them.

Now, the reason why I'm here is to ask if I can re-install TB's, so that the multiple folders would not show up any more. I'm very concerned about my Personal Folders I have in it, so I would not loose them and their contents (their emails I keep). I do not know how to uninstall and re-install without loosing my personal folders. Can you help me with that, and can I do that??

Now since the new Spectrum Webmail Program is in force I still get the multiple folders, I can delete them in TB but they keep coming back. So I'm thinking if I install a brand new installation of TB the multiple folders, with the wrong titles will not show any longer. I would like to do a complete removal/uninstall so that TB does not recognize I had it before, kind of, and install it back as a brand new customer, kind of like!!! If I can do that can you help me with this?

Thank you for your time and efforts, I truly appreciate it all!

PS. I will have to have my Hotmail's email removed and installed also if I can install a new TB!

re :if I can re-install TB's, so that the multiple folders would not show up any more.

There is absolutely no reason to uninstall and reinstall Thunderbird program as the issue has nothing to do with the program.

re : I can delete them in TB but they keep coming back. That's because they still exist on the server and you have subscribed to see them.

In Thunderbird Help > Troubleshooting Information click on 'Open folder' button A new window opens showing you the contents of your profile name folder.

Exit Thunderbird now - this is important

In profile name folder: click on 'ImapMail' folder to see contents. click on the imap mail account name You will see files that have the same name as the folders you want to delete. You may see mbox files eg: 'SentMail' and 'Junkmail' - Delete them. You may also see index files eg: 'SentMail.msf' and 'Junkmail.msf' - Delete them.

Do NOT start Thunderbird just yet.

Logon to webmail account via a browser and delete those 'SentMail' and 'Junkmail' folders.

Now they do not exit on server and they do not exist in your Profile name folder.

Now start Thunderbird.
