I have a fresh firefox (59.0.2) on a ubuntu 16.04. Whenever I try to search for something on the search bar it always tries to resolve it to a url and I get: "Hmm. That address doesn’t look right. Please check that the URL is correct and try again."

I can only search if I use the option "add search bar in toolbar" and only from the search bar, not the "address bar".

I've reset the configuration and it still doesn't work.

Any ideas?

That is possibly done by Ubuntu as part of their Firefox modification.

Try the Firefox version from the official Mozilla server if you currently use a version from the repositories of your Linux distribution.

Maybe check this file:

  • /etc/firefox/syspref.js

You can check this pref on the about:config page.

  • keyword.enabled = true

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I accept the risk!" to continue.

keyword.enabled is set to false and it is locked and I can't change it.
