I am running Firefox 42.0 on:

Hardware Overview:

 Model Name:	MacBook Pro
 Model Identifier:	MacBookPro11,1
 Processor Name:	Intel Core i7
 Processor Speed:	2.8 GHz
 Number of Processors:	1
 Total Number of Cores:	2
L2 Cache (per Core):	256 KB
 L3 Cache:	4 MB
 Memory:	8 GB
 Boot ROM Version:	MBP111.0138.B16
 SMC Version (system):	2.16f68

System Software Overview:

 System Version:	OS X 10.11.1 (15B42)
 Kernel Version:	Darwin 15.0.0
 Boot Volume:	Macintosh HD
 Boot Mode:	Normal
 Secure Virtual Memory:	Enabled
 Time since boot:	23 minutes
  • I have attached an animated GIF of the issue.

The crash reporter is saying:

Heaviest stack for the main thread of the target process:

 69  ??? (<74939224-0015-36BC-96F7-51A79DB79E0A> + 1128535) [0x101a13857]
 69 _pthread_mutex_lock_slow + 300 (libsystem_pthread.dylib + 5670) [0x7fff87bf5626]
 69 __psynch_mutexwait + 10 (libsystem_kernel.dylib + 94094) [0x7fff910bdf8e]
*69 psynch_mtxcontinue + 0 (pthread + 25420) [0xffffff7f80efa34c]

My symptoms:

Basically after a Firefox update, firefox has stopped working for me. It started with Firefox not being able to "CMD+q" to quit. Next, it would freeze when trying to clear history. Now, I can't even open a new tab. I really like Firefox, but this is literally unusable in the current state.

To add even more detail:

I cannot do anything with Firefox now. I tried typing 'about:crashes' in my URL bar and it crashes in mid typing. I have opened the browser in SafeMode but still the behavior continues.

I found a workaround:

  1. Drag 'Firefox.app' (v42.0) to trash
  2. Download and install Firefox 41.0.2 from previous versions page Previous Versions
  3. Open up Firefox profile info folder (was in '~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles) I opened the folder with '.default' (was the only folder for me)
  4. I then deleted everything except the files: 'key3.db' and 'logins.json'
  5. Opened Firefox from Applications folder
