Firefox usually ignores new web addresses typed into the address bar, staying on the current page. Is a preference set incorrectly?

I can enter a web address in the address bar, and perhaps get a response, but not always. If I do get the requested site, when I enter a new web address, Firefox just stays on the current page, seeming to ignore my request. I see no error messages. The behavior is the same using bookmarks, and other html files that have links embedded. The behavior appears to be the same whether the web site is inside or outside our firewall. Safari works fine, but I prefer to use Firefox.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Thanks for taking a shot at trouble shooting. Oddly enough, Firefox was working fine this morning for the first 30 minutes or so, but then the problem started again. Restarting in Safe Mode didn't help. Our IT folks tell me that those web sites don't work with Firefox. I find it hard to believe that all those sites suddenly got together and decided that they would change their sites -- simultaneously -- to quit working with Firefox.

I have been using Firefox for years, but even after downloading the latest version, I am still having this same problem. Unfortunately, it appears that I must move to another browser, and will await the next release to see if that fixes the issue.

I've been having a similar problem, where often if I click a link or bookmark or something, the tab will say 'connecting' like pic related, but then keep me on the page i was already on, no error message or anything. I've tried safe mode, resetting firefox, etc, nothing seems to work. It seemed to go away after the recent update, but suddenly came back. Do you use avast or anything similar?

Who is your ISP? Is it Comcast?

After resetting Firefox, it works fine. I have tried to recreate the issue by changing preferences one-by-one, but have been unable to recreate the previous problem. So, good news and bad news. But at least I can go back to using Firefox for now. If I discover whatever it is that appears to cause the problem, I'll post it here.
