On both my laptops (Win7 32-bit & 64-bit), Gmail in Firefox (ever since v.31) has been prevented from opening by Adblock Plus - what is the cause?

Other extensions in my Firefox are: 1-click YouTube Video Downloader Avast Online Security BetterPrivacy BetterSearch Shareaholic

Adblock Plus worked perfectly until Firefox reached v.31 when, suddenly, in both my laptops, it began to prevent Gmail from opening. Disabling the other 5 extensions has no effect. Disabling Adblock Plus (with the other 5 extensions enabled or disabled) immediately solves the problem. The problem does not occur in Chrome.

Have you tried troubleshooting the filters in ABP? There's a "Last Hit" column in the Filter Rule list that will show you when the last time each filter was used. Makes it easy to find out exactly which filters are used when a web page is opened. From there you can start disabling filters to figure out which one or ones are causing your problem with Gmail.

Thank you FredMcD. Disabling Adblock Plus is not my goal! I want to know how to solve the problem, in order to be able to continue using Adblock Plus as I always have until this glitch occurred

If you followed my instruction above, ADB is disabled only on Gmail.

Adblock Plus has its own support forum over here: http://adblockplus.org/forum/

Thank you again FredMcD.

As things stand, Gmail is fine as long as Adblock Plus is disabled.

My point is that I want Adblock Plus to be ENABLED in Gmail, as it always was, before this problem cropped up.

What can it be that is suddenly causing Adblock Plus to inhibit the opening of Gmail?

How can one fix it?

Thank you Edmeister.

Unfortunately, I can find no similar problem posted by anyone else on the Adblock Plus forum.

If, in the enabled Adblock Plus, I go to the 'Options' page, and there, under [Filter Preferences], I check only the 'Disable Everywhere' box, my Gmail once again opens.

I shall experiment around this.

Thank you for giving me the key to solving my problem!

Hi, sperrin111

Thanks for the follow-up. I'm marking the last answer from the-edmeister as the solution, based on your reply to him where you wrote Thank you for giving me the key to solving my problem!"

Thank you Alice Wyman for the two links you have sent.

Edmeister has shown me the sledgehammer solution. I now need to spend time experimenting with the Adblock Plus settings to try to discover the actual root of the problem.

Sledge hammer? That was a pinpoint diagnosis recommendation. Find and disable the one filter line that is causing your problem, using the Last Hit column and the "time" you tried to load Gmail.

A sledge hammer approach would be disabling ABP on the Gmail website or altogether.

Checking the 'Disable Everywhere' option seems pretty sledge to me!

A more delicate investigation will require time and finesse, of which the former is presently in short supply
