You can set the new tab page by setting the browser.newtab.url pref on the about:config page to your preferred web page.
See also this article about the New Tab page (about:newtab):
You can change the order of the boxes on the about:newtab page and drag an item to a different tile to pin it to that position or you can remove a website by clicking the close X to block that URL.
You can drag a bookmark or history item and drop them in a tile on the about:newtab page to pin them and have your own favorites sites showing.
I did as instructed and I still get a blank page. There is no place to search, no way to customize it with a personal picture, no area for feedback at the lower right hand of the page. Nothing. What next?
The search bar is outside of the content area, near the top of the window. Why do you expect a new tab to have a feedback area if you have not put a page on it yet?
Are you by any chance in full screen mode? I believe that the F11 key on the keyboard toggles full screen for Windows. Try that.
No, I am not in full screen mode. On my husbands profile, when he opens a new tab there is an area on the page where you have tools, and the grid, no grid thing. Then at the lower part of the page there is an embedded link that goes for feedback. When I open a new tab all I have is a blank page, I have no tool option, no grid, no nothing. Is there something that I can cut and paste to show you the page setup/layout?
Hi montanamoss, on your husband's could you check the address bar for that new tab page and see what it says? For example, is it one of the new websites that's similar to the old iGoogle?
If the address bar is blank, he may have a "speed dial" type add-on that is creating that display. Is there anything on the page that might help identify what it is?
I'm going to try and attach some files that my husband has made that show the the page source info. and the ctrl./print scrn image. Ok, it won't let me attach the files. How can I attach this information so that I can let you see what maybe is going on? Is there a different email that I can send this to?
You could upload your pictures to http://imgur.com/ and post the resulting links here for us to see.
Okay. I have created an imgur account under the following: http://montanamoss.imgur.com/all/
It only allowed me to upload the ctrl/printscrn files. How can I send you the page source information. My husband said that might be more helpful.

Did you try to drag an history item or bookmark into one of the (empty) tiles?
I can drag bookmarks there, like when I open a site and drag and drop it in the grid, but there is still no way to search from the open "new tab" page. Also, I cannot set a background image like my husband can for his new tab pages.
You can only use an extension to set a background to the about:newtab page, so you need to check which extension your husband uses for this feature.
If the about:newtab page isn't working properly then check for issues caused by other extensions.
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
- Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.
Your screenshot shows that you have a search bar and a navigation toolbar with an addressbar, as usual, with that blank tab. If you were looking for little thumbnail pictures in a grid, you need to change the setting in about:config for this:
browser.newtab.url - change to about:newtab
It was probably set to about:blank.
@finitarry
It is not a blank tab in the screenshot.
If you look closely then you can see the nine tiles as faint rectangles and the icon to enable/disable the about:newtab page in the top right corner, so it is definitely the about:newtab that is displayed in the tab.
I guess I am not explaining myself well. When my husband opens a new tab on his profile his comes up the the following:
it has the area to "show the new tab or turn them off (the grid)
it has a "settings" tool that allows him to set a theme, choose a picture, or restore to default
and at the bottom right of the page there is an area to click on for feedback.
Mine used to have all that, now it is gone. I guess all I can to is open a new tab, but not set a theme like I once did and I would like to figure out how to restore those features.
The default about:newtab page doesn't come with a settings button or other customization features. Such extra features can only be added by an extension or a theme, so you will have to compare the extensions between the two computers.

It there any way that I can copy and send you a copy of my about:config file and my husbands so that you can tell me what I next to change or fix? Do I need to have him check what add on files he has? I still don't really understand how to fix this. I looked at the add on file and the one that was recommended doesn't let you turn the ad grid off and on.
If you have the about:newtab page in a new tab (browser.newtab.url = about:newtab) and only the background is missing and its related button then it is not likely that you can fix this via the about:config page.
Adding a feature provided by an extension is only possible if you install such an extension.
