I have just updated my version of Flash Player to v12.0.0.43. I am also running Firefox 26.0 on Windows 8.1.

Since updating, I have not had any sound on YouTube. Other videos play fine (including those on the Firefox test page) and IE works fine too.

I have searched Google and so far have tried rolling back my Flash player as well as Firefox and none of these have worked. I have also cleared my cache, checked my volume controls (you'd be surprised at how often this is mentioned as a solution!) and the volume is up on YouTube itself.

None of these seem to work.

Any ideas?

Like I said, I have been able to play any other video in a browser and they all work. Just not YouTube. I use YouTube a bit to upload my own videos, so would love to get this working.

Hi there, I just thought I'd let you know that I worked it out. It was Java of all things. Thanks a lot for all of your help anyway.

Note that your system details list doesn't show that the Shockwave Flash plugin is installed and enabled.

Latest Flash player versions here:

If Firefox is using the built-in HTML5 media player then you may be missing the codec to play the media files properly.
You can try to set the media.windows-media-foundation.enabled pref to false on the about:config page.

You can open the about:config page via the location bar.

Hi there, Thanks for your reply. I have checked and I definitely have Flash Player installed. I even uninstalled and reinstalled it, just in case. Still nothing.

I also tried the second point you mentioned and that didn't work either. Thanks for your suggestions though.

Is there any way I can add my troubleshooting details again? Just to see if it comes up this time?

Do you see the Flash plugin in Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Plugins?

What does it say about the Flash plugin on the about:plugins page?

Yes, it is there. It's "Always activated"

I've attached an image of the page so you can see everything it says.

You can check for problems with current Flash plugin versions and try these:

  • disable a possible RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin extension for Firefox and update the RealPlayer if installed
  • disable protected mode in the Flash plugin (Flash 11.3+ on Windows Vista and later)
  • disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin
